Internet Safety Toolkit

Internet Safety Toolkit

It takes a toolkit to keep our kids safe online!  You can find lots of practical tip sheets below to download and help with cyber safety for kids.  Here are the 5 things you need in your Internet Safety Toolkit.

1 Create a Family Technology Contract.  Kids need boundaries for most aspects of their lives and technology is no different.  Read more about how to create a Family Technology Contract and download the template.

2 Educate yourself about the apps on your child’s device.  There is no way that you can be across every single app available but you can pick up your child’s devices and see what has been downloaded. Find out whether they allow the child to connect with strangers, shares images, see nudity, share their location read bad language.  Use this guide to review apps and online games.

3 Talk to your kids ALOT about being kind online, safe online and their online privacy.  Sit with them while they are playing their favourite game, get them to teach you and open the lines of communication.  Use news articles etc to create conversation.

4 Use parental controls to filter content and help you to manage screen time.  Remember that parental supervision is still your number one tool in your internet safety toolkit.  Find out more about parental controls here.

5 Find a trusted resource because you’ll have questions – lots of them during your digital parenting journey.

Here a few I recommend:

  • esafety.gov.au
  • commonsensemedia.org
  • Download the BEACON app.

Below are lots of practical steps you can take to help keep your kids safe online.
