YouTube Kids Parental Controls

YouTube Kids has been around since 2015 and is specifically designed for children up to 12 years old.

The App can be downloaded onto i-Devicess and Androids and comes with a variety of parental control settings.

It is a much, much better fit for children than regular YouTube which has a rating of 13+.

Parental Controls

There a few options when it comes to setting up YouTube Kids for your child.

You can setup one account and add several children, each with different parental control setttings.

The child is unable to change the settings without entering your super secret passcode (hint: make sure you keep your passcode super secret!)

  • Use a passcode to set and lock parental settings.
  • Block content – specify videos or channels that you don’t want your child watching.
  • Content Settings – this will determine what is considered age appropriate content for your child.  You setup a profile for your child and then content is matched to your child’s age. Brackets are Preschool Content Setting: 4 and Under, Younger Content Setting: 5-7, Older Content Setting: 8-12
  • Approved Content Only –  children can only watch videos/channels/collections that you have approved
  • Turn Search Off – your child cannot search and will only be able to watch videos verified by YouTube Kids
  • Comments – there are no comments visible in YouTube Kids

Ads

So that YouTube Kids remains free, it does show ads.  These ads are limited and approved to be family friendly.  They are required to go through reviewing to ensure that they are compliant.

The ads are shown at the start of a video and the Skip Ad option will appear after a few seconds.

Some creators of videos include paid ads.  These ads will be removed by YouTube IF the creator notifies them about the ads. Otherwise, your children may view ads for products etc.
