Parental Controls for Apple iPads & iPhones

All Apple products have built in restrictions which can be configured to create a safer online experience for your child.

Parental Controls for Apple ipads and iphones

Older Apple models of iPhones and iPads will only update to iOS10 and use ‘Restrictions.’

New iPhones and iPads will update to the current iOS and use ‘Screen Time‘ to filter content and help to manage screen use.

Refer to the table below that indicates the functions that Restrictions and Screen Time offer.

Restrictions

  • Blocking Content: All / Limit Adult Content / Specific Websites
  • Select Age to limit what can bee seen in the App Store (TV, Movies, Apps, Books, Music, News)
  • Enforce your password for App & In-App Purchases

Screen Time

  • Content & Privacy Restrictions
  • Blocking Content: All / Limit Adult Content / Specific Websites
  • Allow Specific Apps
  • Set Time Limits
  • Enforce your password for App & In-App Purchases

Guided Access

Another excellent feature on all iPhones and iPads is Guided Access.

Guided Access allows the parent to use a PIN to lock their child into a specific app, movie or other activity.

Time Limits can be applied or a movie (for example) can be watched in it’s entirity without the child being able to change the volume, pause, fast foward or rewind.

SafeSearch

Most Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) provide a SafeSearch Function.

By turning on SafeSearch within the search engine, searches will be returned minus the adult content.  This applies to written information, images, videos, shopping and news searches.

YouTube Kids [up to 12 years]

  • Use a code to set and lock parental settings
  • Block content – specify videos or channels that you don’t want your child watching
  • Content Settings – this will determine what is considered age appropriate content for your child.  You setup a profile for your child and then content is matched to your child’s age. Brackets are Preschool Content Setting: 4 and Under, Younger Content Setting: 5-7, Older Content Setting: 8-12
  • Approved Content Only –  children can only watch videos/channels/collections that you have approved
  • Turn Search Off – your child cannot search and will only be able to watch videos verified by YouTube Kids

YouTube [17 years +]

Block Adult content (as identified by YouTube) and turn comments off.

  • You will need a Gmail email address to turn on restrictions
  • Make sure you Lock Restricted Mode
  • Turn off Auto Play
