How to Block Adult Content in Google

How to Block Adult Content in Google

Google is undoubtedly the most popular search engine these days.

Our kids have access to it on all internet enabled devices and use it for school and homework research, looking up personal interests such as their favourite sports or hobbies, searching for music and videos. Google searches can return hundreds of thousands of results in a matter of seconds but not all of the results are child friendly.

On purpose or not, a child could potentially be exposed to violence, inappropriate content and adult material. Searches return more than just information.  They return images, videos and shopping links.  Can you imagine if your curious tween typed ‘porn’ into the search bar and then selected the images option?

Google SafeSearch

Luckily, Google has a setting called SafeSearch.  By turning the setting on and locking it, you can feel comfortable with the results that will be returned during searches performed by your children.

I have created some step-by-step notes for you on how to set up Google SafeSearch on your devices and added them to the Internet Safety Toolkit so that you can download them anytime.

There are similar settings available in Yahoo and Bing so I will create notes for those in the near future.

It doesn’t take long to turn the settings on, so why not download the instructions now to improve the internet safety in your home?  Before you start, do a search on something like ‘boobies’ and then try the same search after you have turned SafeSearch on.

Before you Setup Google SafeSearch

Some important things to note before you start:

  • You need a Gmail account to setup Google SafeSearch.
  • Google SafeSearch must be set in every browser on the device.  For example:  if your laptop has Internet Explorer and Chrome then you must go into each browser and activate Google SafeSearch.
  • Do not miss the ‘Locking’ step.  If you do, your child could potentially turn SafeSearch off.
  • When you ‘Lock’ the SafeSearch Settings it will ask you to re-enter your Gmail password
  • Do not share your Gmail password with your children

Use the button below to find out how to turn Google SafeSearch on.
