How to Check the Internet History

09/3/2016

How to Check the Internet History

I have a host of tools from the internet safety toolkit implemented in my home.  I also have a schedule of regular checks that I follow to make sure that each tool is still doing its job.

How to Check The Internet History

One of the items on my checklist is viewing the internet history on each of the devices in our home.  Now, I am quite confident that the content filters that I have in place work effectively, but nothing is 100%  fail-proof.  By checking the internet history, I can satisfy myself that nothing untoward is creeping through.  I can also pick up on other little things like if my child has attempted to create their own email account or social media account.  Kids are smart.  Kids are curious.  These particular examples are based purely on safety, but there is also another reason why I check the internet history.

  • I can see what they have been ‘Googling’
  • I can see what they have been watching on YouTube
  • I can see what games they have been playing

Why would I want to know?  Because it helps me stay connected with what my children are currently interested in (4 Reasons Why I let my Kids go Online) and knowing this information creates engaging conversation starters that lead into Discussing Online Behaviour.

If you use the internet on a regular basis, then you might already be familiar with how to view the internet history.  If not, you can walk through the steps below.  I have also created a handy PDF located after the steps, that you can download and keep for future reference.

Remember:  You need to check every browser on every device (computer, laptop, tablets, mobile phones, gaming consoles, smart TV’s – anything that is internet enabled)
